Department of Surgery:
The department of surgery together with the department of internal medicine are the biggest and earliest founded departments at centre establishment.
The infra-structure of the department of surgery consists of three settings for different diabetic foot ulcers:
- a.An Isolation dressing clinic for highly contaminated wounds.
- b.Infected wounds dressing clinic.
- c.Clean wounds dressing clinic.
Currently, The department provides services for 160-180 patients per day , a total of 4800 patients per month. Up to date the registered number
of patients with diabetic foot ulcers has reached 8250 patients. An INTEGERATED TEAM system is applied to deal with all patients presented
with diabetic wounds. This team is composed of a Head Department (Professor of Surgery), 4 General and Plastic Surgeons, 3 Medical Officers, 20 technical nurses, and 4 general nurses.
A recent study conducted has shown that the centre succeeded in lowering the rate of major lower extremity amputation from 40% to less than 10% in Sudan.
